Mean Girls – The Musical Tickets
“Mean Girls” is a classic coming-of-age film released in 2004. Starring some iconic stars like Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Tim Meadows, the film became an instant pop culture classic. After all, no one will ever forget the savagery that is Regina George. The movie is unapologetically naive, a satire of high school life and the unneeded hierarchy put in place by self-absorbed teenagers. Who does not love teen flicks? They are usually entertaining, reminding us of our days when we were younger and finding our footing in a brutal world.
The beloved movie is among those adapted to the stage, which is a delight because there is nothing more entertaining than a larger-than-life musical. The adaptation gives more sprinkles of life and entertainment obscured by the subdued side of movie realism. On stage, “Mean Girls” suits well with the theatrics. That is why it is a must-see. Tina Fey’s snarly and sassy writing transfers to the stage in this musical. With the direction and choreography of Casey Nicholaw, music by Jeff Richmond, lyrics by Nell Benjamin, orchestration by John Clancy, and designs by Scott Pask, Finn Ross & Adam Young. News of the musical adaptation roused movie fans in 2013. Its actual premiere took place on October 31, 2017, at the National Theatre in Washington D.C. It was expected to be Broadway-bound with its success in the theatre. Its transfer occurred on April 8, 2018, at the August Wilson Theatre. Although its run were really successful, it closed along with many shows during the COVID-19 lockdown. It was later announced that it would not return to the Broadway stage.
Praised on the show is its vibrant and over-the-top set designs. The genius creations of Scott Pask, Finn Ross, and Adam Young brought so much personality to the musical. “The stage swirls with non-stop traffic, if not perfectly executed dance movement. And Gregg Barnes’s costumes come in vividly clashing colors,” Marilyn Stasio of Variety comments.
The musical’s humor is also notable, which is at par with the movie’s zingers and one-liners. It is exceptionally comedic and cleverly intertwines the comedy with the songs and staging. You will see tap-dancing students to a piece about not being able to have self-control and many more. A source of laughs is Karen (one of Regina’s underlings) and her deadpan quips. For a character that is supposed to be exceptionally dense, she spouts witty lines making the “Mean Girls” experience so much fun.

Similar to the movie, the story revolves around Cady Heron, a once Home-schooled girl from Africa. She faces a strange environment going to a high school. There she met Janis Sarkisian and Damian Hubbard, which became her friends. She also caught the attention of “The Plastics,” called so because they are “shiny, fake and hard,” especially their leader, who is Regina George, known for being a “predator.”
Fans of the original movie should be reassured that nothing important has been purged from the story.
The Broadway production of the musical was nominated for 12 different Tony Awards categories, including “Best Musical,” “Best Direction of a Musical,” and “Best Choreography.” The musical also garnered several nominations for the Drama Desk Awards and Outer Critics Circle Awards. It won the “Outstanding Book of a Musical” award in both award-giving bodies.
After its Broadway run, “Mean Girls” went on a national tour. Its first stop was at Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, New York, on September 21, 2019. Mary Kate Morrissey plays the role of Janis Sarkisian, and the other cast members are as follows: Danielle Wade plays Cady Heron, Mariah Rose Faith plays Regina George, Megan Masako Haley plays Gretchen Wieners, Jonalyn Saxer plays Karen Smith, Eric Huffman plays Damian Hubbard, Adante Carter plays Aaron Samuels, and Kabir Bery plays Kevin Gnapoor.
One of the musical production’s stops will be at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, California, performing from January 9 until January 29, 2023.
